What Does My HbA1c Mean in Blood Sugar?

One result, four numbers — and no lab prints all of them. Enter HbA1c as a percentage or mmol/mol, or average glucose as mg/dL or mmol/L, and get the other three, with the full conversion chart underneath.

At or above the diabetes threshold (6.5% and above)

The ADA diagnostic threshold is 6.5%. A diagnosis is not made on one reading — it needs a repeat test, or a second different test, interpreted by a doctor.

HbA1c is not always reliable

It measures sugar stuck to haemoglobin, so anything that changes red blood cells changes the result. It can read falsely low with anaemia, recent blood loss or transfusion, and in pregnancy; falsely high in iron deficiency and kidney disease; and it is unreliable altogether with thalassaemia or sickle cell traits — both common in India. If your HbA1c and your meter readings disagree, that mismatch is worth showing your doctor rather than explaining away.

The number moves when the doses land

HbA1c reflects roughly three months of blood sugar, and missed doses show up in it. TextMyPill sends a WhatsApp reminder at every dose — nothing to install.

Average glucose comes from the ADAG study regression (Nathan et al., Diabetes Care, 2008), the same formula labs use. It is an estimate of your three-month average — two people with the same HbA1c can have very different highs and lows, which is why a meter or CGM still matters. This page converts units and quotes published reference ranges. It does not diagnose anything, and no number here should change your medication. That is your doctor's call.

Questions people ask

What is HbA1c 7% in average blood sugar?

An HbA1c of 7% works out to an estimated average glucose of about 154 mg/dL, or 8.6 mmol/L. On the IFCC scale that is 53 mmol/mol. The conversion comes from the ADAG study formula: average glucose in mg/dL equals 28.7 times the HbA1c, minus 46.7.

How do I convert mg/dL to mmol/L?

Divide by 18.0182. So 154 mg/dL is about 8.6 mmol/L. To go the other way, multiply mmol/L by 18.0182. Indian labs almost always report glucose in mg/dL, while UK, European and most international guidance uses mmol/L, which is why the same reading can look like two different numbers.

What is the difference between NGSP % and IFCC mmol/mol?

They are two scales for the same measurement. NGSP is the percentage most people recognise; IFCC in mmol/mol is the international standard and gives a larger number with no percent sign. An HbA1c of 7% is 53 mmol/mol. Some labs print both, some print only one.

What HbA1c is considered normal, prediabetes and diabetes?

By the ADA's published thresholds, below 5.7% is normal, 5.7% to 6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or above meets the diabetes threshold. A diagnosis is never made on a single reading — it needs a repeat test or a second, different test, interpreted by a doctor.

What period of time does HbA1c cover?

Roughly the previous two to three months, weighted towards the most recent few weeks. Red blood cells live around 120 days, and HbA1c measures how much glucose has attached to the haemoglobin inside them, so it reflects an average rather than any single day.

Can an HbA1c result be wrong?

It can be misleading. Because it depends on red blood cells, it can read falsely low with anaemia, recent blood loss, a recent transfusion or in pregnancy, and falsely high with iron deficiency or kidney disease. It is unreliable in people with thalassaemia or sickle cell traits, both of which are common in India. If your HbA1c and your meter readings disagree, tell your doctor.

Is this calculator medical advice?

No. It converts between units using published formulae and quotes the ADA's published reference ranges — the same ones printed on a lab report. It does not diagnose anything, and no number here should be used to change your medication. That is your doctor's decision.
